auditions

This evening brings auditions for the next two projects that I’m working on: Third and Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol.  One of the most important moments in any productions life is auditions.  There are few decisions that drive the shape of a production such as auditions and they are one of the few things I still get really anxious about.  The decisions made in the next couple evenings have ramifications that will be felt within the organization and our community for a long time to come.  A misstep here can sink an entire production and in uncertain times like this a sunk production could bob like an iceberg, tearing into our theatre’s hull.

That’s a bit dramatic but the metaphor is fairly apt.  We are still very small, struggling to put our art together and broaden and deepen our audience.  Mistakes can be very costly – for while each production lives its own artistic life, that life does not happen in a vaccuum.  That fact can be very sobering and makes the pressure for success incredibly strong.  The theatre is not in such a place that it can handle a failed production.  A term that we use often is the ‘intentional family’.  It is a term that means a lot to me – it is the primary reason I’ve chosen to continue to work here.  And while the group often interprets it to mean the artists and friends we have surrounded us with, it is not unreasonable to stretch it out to include those members of the community that pass through our doors.  We(I) have a responsibility to do those things that we promise.  It is my responsibilty to make choices and decisions in the next couple of evenings to fulfill those promises . . . I don’t want to let my family down.
